چکیده

This report outlines the development and testing of a prototype compact automated impact hammer designed to be surface mounted on a structure to provide an impulse-based structural excitation source for vibration testing. The automated device was designed to be integrated with a distributed fibre optic sensing system which measures the in-plane dynamic strain of the structure at a spatially dense grid of sensing points. The hammer was tested on a composite plate with induced damage and the excitation and response data were used to generate complex curvature shapes for the plate. These data were in turn used with a structural health monitoring tool known as iSIDER that detects anomalies in complex operating curvature shapes to locate damage and other areas with structural stiffness variations. The impactor was shown to replicate the functionality of a modally tuned impact hammer that had been used previously. The analysed data correctly identified the impact damage location using a fully automated routine. APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE

A comparison between modal damping ratios identified by NExT-ERA and frequency domain impact test

In this research, the modal parameters of a beam in free-free condition are extracted by performing different experiments in laboratory. For this purpose, two different techniques are employed. The first methodology is considered as a time domain method in Operational Modal Analysis. While the other one is frequency domain impact hammer test which is categorized as an Experimental Modal Analysi...

A Statistical Comparison of Impact and Ambient Testing Results from the Alamosa Canyon Bridge

In this paper, the modal properties of the Alamosa Canyon Bridge obtained using ambient data are compared to those obtained from impact hammer vibration tests. Using ambient sources of excitation to determine the modal characteristics of large civil engineering structures is desirable for several reasons. The forced vibration testing of such structures generally requires a large amount of speci...

Damage identification of structures using experimental modal analysis and continuous wavelet transform

Abstract: Modal analysis is a powerful technique for understanding the behavior and performance of structures. Modal analysis can be conducted via artificial excitation, e.g. shaker or instrument hammer excitation. Input force and output responses are measured. That is normally referred to as experimental modal analysis (EMA). EMA consists of three steps: data acquisition, system identificatio...

Modal analysis of a turbo-pump shaft: An innovative suspending method to improve the results

Modal parameter extraction of high speed shafts is of critical importance in mechanical design of turbo-pumps. Due to the complex geometry and peripheral components of turbo-pumps, difficulties can arise in determination of modal parameters. In this study, modal properties of a turbo-pump shaft, was studied by experimental modal analysis, and using different excitation techniques. An innovative...

FEM Updating for Offshore Jacket Structures Using Measured Incomplete Modal Data

Marine industry requires continued development of new technologies in order to produce oil. An essential requirement in design is to be able to compare experimental data from prototype structures with predicted information from a corresponding analytical finite element model. In this study, structural model updating may be defined as the fit of an existing analytical model in the light of measu...
